Nothing About Us Without Us.

At Families for Justice as Healing, our mission is to end the incarceration of women and girls. Our strategies are:

Organizing – We work on campaigns to challenge the power of police, prosecutors, and prisons and transform the criminal punishment system.

Advocacy – We bring the expertise and experience of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and our families to public policy work in Massachusetts.

Participatory Defense -We have an open meeting every Wednesday from 6-8pm for people who are being prosecuted and their families to receive support and strategize to fight for the best outcomes in their case. We do this work in collaboration with our partners at the Massachusetts Bail Fund. (Due to COVID-19 these meetings are held online. Please contact us on how to join)

Human Justice – We work within our community to create alternatives to the current system that will meet the needs of women and our families.

Our History:

FJAH was founded in 2010 inside the federal prison for women in Danbury, CT. Our organization’s founder, Andrea James sought to create an organization with the crucial, yet often overlooked, focus on incarcerated mothers and the impact on their children.

When Andrea James was released in 2011, she carried FJAH back to her home community in Roxbury, MA. Since then, FJAH has been active building coalitions nationally and raising public awareness about the need to shift from over-criminalization and incarceration to reinvestment in communities. From organizing incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, to national conferences and rallies and policy advising, FJAH is continually expanding and evolving.
