2017 MA Legislation

Families for Justice as Healing improved and refiled the “Primary Caretakers Bill” for the 190th legislative session. We encourage you to contact your state legislators and ask them to support SD 622.

The goal of this bill is to alleviate harm to children and theirparents or caretakers caused by separation during incarceration, and to┬ástrengthen families’ connections to their communities.

65% of women in prison are mothers, most of whom were living with their children at the time they were convicted. This bill asks judges to pause, consider the impact of incarceration on a mother and her children, and recommend alternative sentences that allow her to continue taking care of her children and living in her community instead of being locked in a cage. Such alternative sentences could be programs like those offered at Brookview House in Dorchester.
